Naturopath in Penticton - The body's organ known as the kidney has several functions and plays an important part in the urinary system. The functions of the kidney comprises the maintaining of the acid-base balance, helping to serve the homeostatic functions of electrolyte regulation and maintaining the salt and water balance that helps in the blood pressure regulation. The kidneys serve the body by getting rid of wastes and redirecting them to the urinary bladder. The kidneys act basically as the blood's natural filter.

The kidney would help to emit wastes when producing urine. These wastes may consist of urea and ammonium from the body. In addition, kidney's are responsible for the reabsorption of glucose, water and amino acids. The kidneys produce various hormones as well like: the enzyme called rennin, erythropoietin and calcitrol.

The kidneys are found within the retro peritoneum at the rear of the abdominal cavity. The kidneys receive blood from the paired renal arteries and drain into the paired renal veins. Each kidney then excretes urine into a ureter. This is a tube-like paired structure that releases into the urinary bladder.

Nephrology is the medical forte concerned with kidney diseases. Renal physiology describes the study of kidney function. People with kidney disease usually show characteristic clinical features like renal cysts, chronic kidney disease, urinary tract obstruction, nephritic syndromes, acute kidney injury and nephrolithiasis.

There are cancers of the kidney that currently exist, with renal cell carcinoma being the most common renal cancer. A lot of cancers, renal conditions and cysts can be managed with removal of the kidney, likewise referred to as nephrectomy. Kidney dialysis and kidney transplantation are other treatment alternatives if renal function, that is measured by glomerular filtration rate is always poor.

Kidney stones can be a nuisance and a pain even though they are not severely harmful. A sound wave treatment can break up the stones into smaller pieces so they can be passed through the urinary tract. Sharp pain in the lateral and median parts of the lower back is among the main symptoms.

Renal Physiology

In the body, the kidney is essential part of homeostasis. Their responsibilities include the balancing acids-base, regulation of electrolyte concentrations, blood pressure regulation and regulation of the volume of extracellular fluid. The kidney functions both separately and along with other organs in order to achieve these essential jobs. The kidneys work closely with the endocrine system and numerous endocrine hormones coordinate these functions including: aldosterone, rennin, angiotensin II and others.

A huge variety of the kidney's functions are carried out by the fairly basic mechanisms of filtration, secretion and reabsorption. These functions happen in the nephron of the kidney. Filtration mainly happens at the renal corpuscle. This is the method wherein big proteins and cells are filtered from the blood to make an ultra-filtrate. This particular substance eventually becomes urine. The kidney produces about 180 litres of filtrate everyday. They reabsorb a large percentage of the filtrate and generate about only 2 litres of urine on a daily basis. Reabsorption is the word for the transportation of molecules from this ultra-filtrate into the blood. Conversely, secretion is the reverse method, wherein molecules are transported in the opposite direction, from the blood into the urine.

Waste Excretion
The kidneys are responsible for emitting a lot of wastes from the body that are produced by metabolism. These nitrogenous wastes include uric acid from nucleic acid metabolism and urea from protein catabolism.
